Sleep deprivation can lead to irritability, so if you find yourself becoming irrationally angry, it may be due to your lack of sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, a quick nap no longer than half an hour improves your mood and helps you feel more awake afterwards. If you nap for longer, you may drift into REM sleep, which may affect your sleep/wake cycle and be detrimental to your nighttime sleep. So, set your alarm, and youll be able to wake up feeling rejuvenated.3. Eat chocolateJumping on the pro-chocolate bandwagon, we want to point out that chocolate has shown to improve your mood and push away anxiety and depression. Eating something sweet boosts serotonin in your brain, helping you feel content. Dark chocolate especially showed the highest effects in different studies, along with the benefit of high antioxidant content, which supports healthy cells. In addition, a study found that people who walk in nature feel more calm than those walking in urban areas. If you feel your mind racing and are unable to defeat the mounting stress, you can immediately relax and feel joy from your peaceful green surroundings.5. Pet a puppyIf youre under a lot of pressure, you are more in tune to movement and your sense of touch. Petting a dog lowers your blood pressure almost immediately, dissipating any of your worries. Even people with high blood pressure who adopted dogs showed a healthy decline in their blood pressure after five months. You can learn a lot from your pet playing with an animal raises your serotonin levels as well as dopamine, the perfect combination of happiness and relaxation. If youre feeling alone in the world, having a pet nearby can erase any of those feelings by offering their companionship. The carefree, live-in-the-moment lives they lead are an inspiration to how you should be living yours.6. Turn on the radioListening to music and feeling the beat can lift any bad mood. Creating or listening to music by playing an instrument or singing can r elease a creative block you may have had. Hug a loved oneAlong the same lines of petting an animal, getting a nice embrace from a friend can greatly change your mood. You feel supported and loved hugs can release any tension you may be carrying with you. There was even a study that showed that men who were more affectionate and who hugged other people more often were much happier than men who had less personal contact with others. Also, being around people who you love releases the hormone oxytocin, which also helps improve your mood.8. Go for a runExercise, as we mentioned before, is a great stress reliever and basically makes everything better. You can push negative and destructive thoughts out of your mind and leave them in the dust as you pump your muscles. Any kind of exercise, as long as you elevate your heart rate, can improve your mood. Exercise can also boost your self-este em and assist in weight loss, which is great for your overall health. Feeling good about your body can make you feel great think about how miserable you were the last time you had a bad hair day Just make sure not to go too hard and tire yourself out, because that could drop you back down into a bad mood.9. Plant flowers or create flower arrangementsGetting fresh air isnt just a made-up thing that your mom said to get you out of the house. Being outside around growing things definitely help your mood. Plants purify our air, provide great decorations with their bright colours, and also boost your mood. While looking at flowers may do all this, planting flowers can stimulate your creative vibes. Working with your hands and fulfilling a task can help you feel fulfilled when creating flower arrangements too.10. Break the rulesFinally, the most surprising suggestion we have to help you feel better is to break the rules. A quick way to feel exhilarated is to do something against the rule s, but obviously make sure whatever youre doing isnt life threatening to you or others. Using the same logic as exercise, you can get your heart racing out of anticipation when youre doing something you know you shouldnt. So, explore your limits and then give them a push. Take a break from work. Go skydiving. Do silly pranks on your friends. Dont let fear hold you back, as hesitation and inaction just exacerbate anxiety. A great way to release pent-up feelings is to be a little naughty from time to time too. This article was originally published onYourCoffeeBreak.co.

Preparing for an Interview Use the Job Description

Preparing for an Interview Use the Job Description Preparing for an Interview Use the Job Description The most underutilized tool in preparing for job interviews is the jobdescription. As a job seeker, you rely heavily upon the job description in the early stages of the hunt- after all, its the only piece of information you have to help you land an interview. But, once youve landed that interview, the job description gets tossed aside because its no longer relevant.Job descriptions actually contain a secret wealth of knowledge that can aid you in preparing for an interview. Instead of balling up that piece up paper (or closing that browser tab), use these tips to prepare for a smoother, successful interview.1. Talking pointsWhen preparing for an interview, most people will focus on what questions they think the employer is going to ask. While this is a valid approach, it can also be a complete guessing game. Instead of focusing on what the employer might ask, focus on creating answer s you can use for any number of different questions based on the things included in the job description.A good job description will lay out all the essential skills the employer is seeking. The employer wants to understand how you developed those skills and what youve accomplished using them.Prepare for your interview byBrainstorming a talking point for each technical or hard skill or listed in the job description. Focus on highlighting your accomplishments, milestones, and the goals youve achieved using that specific skill. If they are seeking someone with 2+ years of experience leading a team, make notes on the key successes that a team has accomplished under your direction in the last few years. The hiring manager who wrote the job description is likely to also be the interviewer, unless its a technical position where they are screening for technical abilities. Demonstrating that you understand the job and its requirements from the job description well enough to structure your answ ers around their desired qualifications is a good way to build rapport. While not every bullet from the job description will be brought up in the job interview, if youre prepared to explain not only that you possess each skill, but also how you excelled at it, youll have talking points for any skill-related question they throw your way.Identifying stories from your past that will demonstrate you possess the characteristics and soft skills the employer is seeking.Assessing soft skills in an interview is difficult because the employer usually spends less than an hour with you. While theyll be able to get a snapshot of your general personality and interpersonal skills during the interview, you need to paint a complete picture of what youre like in a professional setting day-in and day-out.Create a list of stories from your previous jobs, school, and volunteer work that correspond to soft skills in the job description. If they want someone highly communicative and client-centric be armed with a story of a specific time you went above and beyond your normal job duties to satisfy a client or kept them abreast of developments in a highly important campaign you headed up.If youre prepared with talking points about both your hard and soft skills, including specific stories and examples to back up your claims, you dont need to stress over what the questions will be- youve already got your answers2.Identify weaknessesDont feel disheartened if you dont meet all of the criteria for a position. In a job description, the employer essentially lays out their unicorn employee. In reality, most candidates will have mastered some skills, but lack others. In preparing for the interview, your weaknesses should become apparent. As you developed your talking points in step one, you probably struggled to come up with stories for some of the desired qualifications. Those are your weak spots, and you need to be prepared to talk about them.To combat your weaknesses before the interviewBe h onest with yourself about your skill levels. If you exaggerate your skills during the interview, and cant perform them upon landing the job, it will reflect poorly upon you- and could even get you fired.Be armed with specific plans about how and where you can learn the skills where you are weak or lack experience. Also share any related skills you already possess that will speed up the learning curve.abflug learning as much as you can about the areas in which you are weakest. Even if you only spend a couple hours reading up on the subject, you will at least have enoughknowledge of the topic to understand what the employer is seeking. Plus, theres always the chance you know more about the subject than you realizedHonesty about what you can and cant do is important during the interview. The employer will appreciate your honesty, especially if its coupled with a sincere desire to learn the skills necessary to perform the job. And by acknowledging your weaknesses ahead of time, you can avoid being stumped by relatedinterview questions.3.Create questionsWhile a job description can give you a ton of useful information on how to prepare for your interview, it does not present a complete picture. Company websites and resources such as Glassdoor can be useful tools to gather furtherinformation, but interviews provide the best access to information- directly from the source. After youve read the job description, you should have a broad sense of what the position entails, what the company values, and how you stack up. Ask yourself what the job description doesnt tell you. Those are the questions you want to ask during the interview.Consider the followingWhat does the job description tell you about company culture?Do you get a clear sense of what the companys ideal candidate would look like?Do you understand how this role fits into their team? Their organization? The company?Use the questions above to guide you and think about what missing information you want to gather in the interview. Most interviewers expect you to have questions prepared, because it demonstrates that youve been researching the company and are serious about the job.The other bonus to crafting questions based on the job description is that you can verify how accurately it portrays the job and the company. If the job description says the company values a good work/life balance, and thats a big selling point for you, dont be afraid to ask, The job description mentioned this company prioritizes work/life balance. Can you tell me about the policies you have in place to promote this?Remember, you are interviewing the company just as much as they are interviewing you. A good employer will be impressed, not put off, by your attention to the details in their job description and your interest in their priorities. The job description is only a starting point, but it can help you assess what you dont know, as well as what you do know about the job. Its up to you to collect the rest. When you l and an interview, keep in mind that one of the hardest parts is already over.Your resume beat their applicant track systemand now you have the opportunity to meet with someoneface to face. The company has already shown an interest in you, so showing up to the interview prepared and relaxed will just affirm their decision to select you.More Interview TipsCommunications Coach 3 Things to Do Before an InterviewHow to Answer What Are Your Salary Expectations? How to Look and Sound Professional in a Phone or Video Interview

How to communicate when something goes wrong at work

How to communicate when something goes wrong at workHow to communicate when something goes wrong at workWhether youre a manager telling employees the bad news, or an employee who has to tell your boss what they dont want to hear - but need to know - there are ways to take the edge off. Here are three ways to do so.Maintain a serious toneThis should be a no-brainer, but a refresher never hurts.Rhett Power, an author and co-founder of Wild Creations, writes on CNBC.com that managers shouldnt joke around at this time. When delivering bad news, cracking jokes is disrespectful and comes off as rude. It may be difficult for some people to avoid because its natural to want to lighten the mood in uncomfortable situations with humor, but you must avoid doing this at all costs to avoid coming off as insensitive, he writes.Talk to them face-to-faceThis is always a good idea.Jeff Haden, an author, ghostwriter, speaker and contributing editor to Inc., writes about this on the site.Maybe, ultimat ely, it was not your decision to cut jobs. Maybe you had no input but are still the person required to enforce a major shift in policy. When you are in charge, you deliver all bad news, he writes. And do so in person. If you have bad news to deliver to a group of employees, get the group together. Or if there are individual repercussions resulting from that bad news, talk to each person separately. If you cant do it in person, do it by video or phone. Never choose a method that makes the communication one way.Just be honest with your managerDawn Rosenberg McKay, an author and certified Career Development Facilitator, writes in The Balance that you should present your boss with a plan to correct the error. You will need to come up with a plan to rectify your mistake and present it to your boss. Hopefully, you will be able to put something together before you first approach her, but dont waste time if you cant. Reassure her that you are working on a solution, she continues. Then, once you know what you need to do, present it. Be very clear about what you think you should do and what you expect the results to be.Tell your boss how long it will take to implement and about any associated costs. Make sure to have a Plan B ready, in case your boss shoots down Plan A. While making a mistake is never a good thing, dont miss the opportunity to demonstrate your problem-solving skills.

Despite their priorities, nearly half of Americans over 55 still dont have a will

Despite their priorities, nearly half of Americans over 55 still dont have a willDespite their priorities, nearly half of Americans over 55 still dont have a willLast week, Merrill Lynch and Age Wave published findings from their new study Leaving a Legacy A Lasting Gift to Loved Ones. The study explores the importance of leaving a legacy to loved ones after death. I spoke to Kevin Hindman, Managing Director and National Trust Executive at Merrill Lynch, about the findings of the study and what readers should take away from it.Nearly Half of Americans Over 55 Do Not Have a WillThe major takeaway is that nearly half of those over 55 have elend yet created a will. To make matters worse, only 18 percent of people in that age range have all of the recommended legacy plan essentials a will, a health care directive, and durable power of attorney. When people think about estate planning, they probably mainly think about the need for a will. However, that is not the only important piece. A he alth care directive and durable power of attorney are necessary in case you get sick or injured and are unable to make decisions for yourself. Having these in distribution policy ensures that you will have an advocate and your wishes will be followed.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraThey Believe They Should Have Their Affairs In Order By 50Despite the above finding, there is a widely held belief that one should have their affairs in order by age 50. The disconnect was particularly striking, said Hindman. Perhaps it is because most people want to be remembered for more than just the money they may be leaving behind. In fact, 69 percent say they most want to be remembered for memories shared with their loved ones. Hindman had more thoughts about the reasoning, which is discussed more below. They Feel More Comfortable Talking About DeathDeath has traditionally been a taboo topic tha t people try to avoid. However, according to this study, 90 percent of people are open to discussing end-of-life options with family and friends. This is an important and encouraging trend. However, the conversations need to be followed up by action. They Worry They Wont Have AdvocatesForty-three percent of respondents over 55 are worried that they lack an advocate to look out for their best interests toward the end of their life. During this time, priorities include deciding where you want to live, how you will be supported personally and financially, and what medical treatments you may or may not want. Americans say they want to remain in control of those matters late in life. This is especially important for women who, due to their higher life expectancies, are far more likely to outlive their spouses or partners. Having a health care directive and durable power of attorney will ensure that your wishes are known and followed.Protecting Loved Ones Is A PriorityPeople say they want to avoid becoming a burden or causing financial hardships for their loved ones. In fact, they say that this is their number one objective. However, more than half admit that their lack of effective end-of-life planning could leave long-lasting problems, confusion, and emotional turmoil for their families.Whats Holding People Back?Since there is such a disconnect between feelings and actions, I asked Hindman what is holding people back from being prepared. People dont know where to abflug, he said. They dont know the basics about what they need and how to prepare the necessary documents. When you dont know where to start, its hard to start at all. Its easy to put it off and then never get to it until its too late.It is also the case that most people do not experience the aftermath of estate planning, or lack thereof, until their own parents or other close family members die. It doesnt feel like something that needs to be addressed until it influences people personally, and this exper ience is happening later and later in life as life expectancies rise. Why Is This Important?A legacy is one of the best gifts we can give to those we love, says Hindman. If you die without your affairs in order, you put your loved ones in a time-consuming, expensive, stressful process while they are already in mourning. It is an additional burden that they have to worry about. Without a clear estate plan in place, assets get sent to probate and a court decides how to divide them up. So not only does it take a long time to be sorted out, but your loved ones wont know what you really hoped to do with those assets. Planning ahead will protect your loved ones from this additional stress. But its not just the benefit to your loved ones, it also benefits you to plan ahead. Those who do have the three legacy essentials in place feel far more in control over their end-of-life affairs and are far more confident that their family could advocate for their needs. Those who dont say that it keeps them up at night. If you have a clear directive in place, you can rest assured that your wishes will be carried out if you were to get sick or injured. What Should People Do to Get Started?Hindmans main piece of advice here is to just get started. Its more important to actually take the action and modify as appropriate, instead of waiting until the perfect time. The truth is, there will never be a perfect time to plan for death, so its better to start early and just make changes later. Otherwise, you might keep putting it off until its too late. How can you do that?Talk to Family and FriendsHindman said that talking to peers is a helpful place to start. As Ive written before, its always important to talk about financial matters with friends so that you feel less alone and confused. It will be especially helpful if you talk to people who have lost parents and dealt with their estate afterward. They may even be able to refer you to a financial advisor or lawyer to start the process.Wor k with a Financial AdvisorThe next step is to meet with a financial advisor. An advisor can provide you with a reality check on the cost of long-term care, which most people underestimate or incorrectly assume will be covered by Medicare. An advisor could also offer some perspective on legacy planning as a whole, including ways a trust or life insurance can help you minimize taxes and manage assets for your loved ones.Ask the Right QuestionsOnce you have spoken to your friends and family and met with a financial advisor, then you should talk to a lawyer. Find out what the estate laws are in your state of residence. Find out which steps youll need to take to complete the process. Once you feel comfortable that you understand the process, the lawyer can begin to create the planning documents for you.The most important takeaway is that there is never a perfect time to take care of estate planning. It will never be an exciting activity to complete since its pretty morbid. However, youll feel much better once its done, and your loved ones will benefit more than you can imagine. So start having those conversations and taking the necessary steps. Letter Asking to Work From Home Because of Relocation

Letter Asking to Work From Home Because of RelocationLetter Asking to Work From Home Because of RelocationWorking from home used to be synonymous with sleeping in, doing errands, and working in your pajamas, and employers only allowed it in case of emergency. That was the dark ages. Today, technology has changed everything. Thanks to internet, email, messaging applications, and video conferencing, you can be just as productive and accessible at home as you would be on-site. You can even collaborate with a team just as effectively as you would if you were all located in the same place. However, just because technology makes it possible to work remotely doesnt mean that every employer or every manager is on board. If youre relocating because of a spouses job change or similar but you still love your job and dont want to make a change you might need to convince your supervisor to allow you to work from home. Tips for Getting Approved to Work Remotely When you do so, its important to emphasize the benefits to the company, instead of talking about the plusses from your perspective. Remember the bottom line is, well, the bottom line. If you can demonstrate that letting you work from home will save or even make money for the company, youll stand a much better perspektive of convincing the boss. 1. Calculate the Savings Everyone is available around the clock anyway with smartphones, meeting technology, virtual office software, and other remote options the days of being changed to your desk, let alone your office, are over. While employees benefit from the flexibility of working from home with a better work-life balance, allowing workers to telecommute can also save the company money. From real estate costs to snacks in the breakroom to subsidized commuting, not having you in the office can make a real difference in terms of costs to your employer. Before you speak with your manager, tally up these savings. Theres little more persuasive than dollars and cents, esp ecially to budget-conscious supervisors. 2. Demonstrate Higher Productivity and Loyalty Telecommuting workers are actually more productive than their colleagues confined to an office, plus they report more job satisfaction. A Stanford study showed that working from home added up to an extra day of work over time, due to the fact that commuters lose hours to being late or leaving early. The same study showed that remote workers took shorter breaks and less time off than their colleagues in the office. Unsurprisingly, they also used less sick time, probably due to less exposure to sick coworkers. Telecommuters were also less likely to leave their jobs. Attrition fell by 50 percent among study participants who were allowed to work from home. (Thats also a huge cost savings for your employer think about how much it costs to recruit, hire, and train replacements for workers who leave for greener pastures.) 3. Be Willing to Prove Yourself To seal the deal, ask for a trial period. A reaso nable boss likely wont argue with that again, especially when the cost of recruiting and training someone to fill your role will be far higher. Then, do your best work during that trial period. Be proactive about communicating with your boss and teammates about your schedule and availability. Be accessible via all the usual means of communication, including email, Slack, or phone. Dont try to multitask with personal and professional responsibilities. Secure childcare if you need it and dont let household chores become daytime work. (The laundry can wait your 1 p.m. conference call cant.) If you work from home the right way, youll reduce your employers concern about absenteeism and inefficiency that affects their bottom line. Want to ask your employer to let you work from home due to relocation? Frame your request in a letter. Asking to Work From Home Because of Relocation Letter Example (Text Version) Subject Meeting to Discuss RelocationDear Henry,As you know, my wife is going to be relocating to Denver in a few months. I would very much like the opportunity to meet with you to discuss the possibility of my continuing to work for you remotely, once our move is complete. After our move, I would be available to travel to the office when necessary and would be willing to maintain very close contact on the projects underway and moving forward.I believe that my interest and experience will continue to be an asset to the company, and would appreciate the opportunity to continue to work with this fine team.Thank you for your consideration and Im looking forward to discussing this possibility in person.Best regards,Aaron Expand

How to Prepare for a Job Search

How to Prepare for a Job Search How to Prepare for a Job Search Sometimes, a job search happens by choice. Sometimes, you dont have an option. In either case, its important to be prepared to change jobs â€" because you never know when a career transition might become necessary for you. If possible, its always a good idea to stay on excellent terms with your previous employers by giving plenty of notice, offering to help find and train a replacement, and agreeing to be available for questions in the future. Take Care of the Basics First Whether youre about to hand in your resignation or youve just received a pink slip or been fired, its important to prepare to leave your current role and to conduct a job search. Take care of the basics first and check on  eligibility  for continuation of health and life insurance benefits, accrued vacation pay, unused sick pay, and other payments terminated employees may be entitled to. Keep in mind that there may be a lag between when your current health insurance coverage ends and a new policy starts. If youve been terminated, ask your employer about eligibility for continuing coverage through  COBRA  and file for  unemployment immediately. You may be able to file over the phone or online. Also, check into the governments Marketplace Insurance (Obamacare) plans. If your work situation is unstable and youre not sure if youll still have a job tomorrow,  get ready to start a job search now. Remember, you dont have an obligation to accept a new position if you get an offer. Plus, it never hurts to see whats available. You never know â€" you just might get an offer you cant refuse! How to Prepare for a Job Search Research the Job Market: Especially if it’s been a while since you had to search for a job, it pays to take the time to check out the job market before you start a job search. This is easy to do online; there are free salary calculators that can help you estimate your worth in the current market, and you should also use the advanced search options available on job sites like LinkedIn, Indeed, and Career Builder to get an idea about the demand for your professional skills in different geographic markets. Create or Update your LinkedIn Profile: LinkedIn is an invaluable social media tool for job searching, since often people learn about the most exciting new job opportunities through their professional networks. Creating a profile and building a network allows prospective employers to review your resume, alerts you to new job openings, and introduces you to other professionals who might be willing to recommend you as a job candidate to their own companies. Here’s how to use LinkedIn effectively.Work on Your Resume and Cover Letters:  Its important to have a well-written resume and compelling cover letters (specifically tailored for each job to which you apply). Quite simply, resumes help get us interviews. A cover letter is often your earliest written contact with a potential employer, creating a critical first impression. Use our  Resume and Cover Letter Guide  to ensure that your job search correspondence is top-notch. Get References:  Plan ahead and compile a list of  references  and some letters of recommendation, so youre prepared when a prospective employer requests them. Get contact information for your co-workers, vendors, customers, etc. so youll have it for future networking purposes.Use Your Personal Contact Information:  Use non-work contact information for all of your job search communications. That way, if your access is cut off at work, youll still be reachable by having a home phone or a cell phone with voice mail, and potential employers will be able to reach you through a non-work email address. Know What Youre Going to Say About Leaving:  If youve quit your job, or are even just planning on quitting, be prepared with an  answer for interviewers  who are going to want to know why you resigned.Worried About Getting Caught?  Apply confidentially for jobs online. There are ways to  keep your job search confidential  and protect your identity from certain employers and recruiters.Dont Leave Anything Behind:  Clean up your computer. Delete personal files and email, and  bring home your personal belongings. Finally, if you are resigning,  always leave on the best terms you possibly can  and dont burn any bridges. Let the company know in advance that youre leaving, let them know why (as diplomatically as possible), and thank them for having had the opportunity to work there.

When to Follow up During the Hiring Process

When to Follow up During the Hiring Process When to Follow up During the Hiring Process There are several stages of the hiring process that each require a specific time to follow up. We explain when to follow up for each stage during the hiring process. This way, you will never come across as desperate, aloof, or disrespectful during your job search. 1. You just submitted an application When: Wait between five and ten business days. However, if you applied through online applications you are very much at the mercy of the company’s discretion. They will usually send you an auto-email reading, “We have many job candidates and will reply to only those we are interested in”. Notes: This is what makes applying for jobs as a result of networking so important. You at least have a human being to contact. If you have a person to contact keep in mind things like holidays and/or the person who referred you. It’s always good to ask the referrer the best time to follow up. 2. You just had a phone interview When: If all things went well, follow up the same day and thank them for the call. Do not worry. A “thank you for your time today” email is respectful and is a good chance to emphasize your interest in the company. You are also showing your written and interpersonal skills. If you do not hear back anything after the phone interview, follow up with an email asking for a status update and confirming your interest after 3 business days unless otherwise stated. Check out this template for a follow up after a phone interview. 3. You just had the in-person interview When: Congratulations if you made it this far in the hiring process! The next day, send out either an email or handwritten letter (people still appreciate this) and state your appreciation for the interview. Be sure to highlight your interest in the job and let them know you look forward to being in touch again soon.If you do not hear back after the in-person interview, follow up with an email asking for a status update and confirming your interest after 3 business days unless otherwise stated.Check out this template for a follow up after a phone interview. 4. You just received the“We will let you know” email When: You did numbers 1, 2, and 3 above. You followed up appropriately with your emails. And now you are told, “we will let you know”. It is not always the best feeling to get this email but it is not a rejection by any means. It is now time to be patient and continue job searching. Wait 5 business days before checking in again. Note: If you are in an active job search and receive an offer for another job during that time, it is professional and reasonable to reach back out and let the employer know. Letting them know may offer you leverage for a job offer or it may make it easier for them to remove you as a possible hire. Either way, it makes your life easier. Final note Never jump to conclusions, take things personally, or become impatient. The hiring process requires a combination of patience, professionalism, and respect for the time and efforts of others. The last thing you want to do is manifest your fears into your reality by destroying job opportunities because you feared they would never call you back.

The Decision Maker Is Ignoring Me On LinkedIn

The Decision Maker Is Ignoring Me On LinkedIn The Decision Maker Is Ignoring Me On LinkedIn Who are you, anyway? 1 of literally a million other jobseekers trying to beat down the path to dream jobland. 1 of thousands of candidates blasting off their resumes in response to a bunch of online ads. 1 of hundreds of people trying to improve your LinkedIn network by reaching out to whomever in some random fashion. 1 of dozens every day sliding into some recruiter or decision makers’ inbox, only to hear nothing but #crickets… Let’s not have you be any of those people. You are an intelligent professional, with a unique element to bring to the table, who can clearly, simply articulate your value, and state that to the right person in a way that prompts a response. “But Jewel, I’ve already tried to network and reach out to recruiters on LinkedIn. So far I haven’t had a single response.” Don’t Be A Robot. Be Social. LinkedIn is social media. I know that’s hard to remember because it’s not centered on Candy Crush, kitten videos, and baby snapshots. While LinkedIn is all business, it’s still a social media platform. The key here is to act like a human being first and foremost. It’s important to dispense with the generic LinkedIn invitation that’s already filled in for you, “I’d like to connect with you on LinkedIn.” Back To “Who Are You” Anyway Put yourself on the receiving end of an invitation for a moment. How many times on ANY social media platform have you received an invitation or message and the 1st thing you asked yourself in your mind was, “Who the heck is this?” Right. So don’t be that person. Start off with how you found the person. It’s best if this is something personal, so look through their LinkedIn profile to see what you may have in common, such as school or a volunteer organization. Better yet, see if the person’s written any articles on LinkedIn or the Internet, and mention something from 1 of their posts that resonates with you. For example, “Hi, Joe. I’m an accounting manager in NYC, and I just came across the article you wrote about how accounting isn’t just about the numbers anymore â€" so true! I’d like to stay in touch on LinkedIn.” Don’t Ask For A Job? A Contact? An Informational Interview? Anything? Correct. How would you feel if a person you’re meeting for the 1st time walks up to you and asks you to give them something, anything? It doesn’t work that way. Act like a normal human being who wants to get to know the other person to some degree. Then The Magic Happens When you say something genuine to a person that demonstrates you spent a moment or 2 finding out something about them and commenting on it in a sincere way, they’re significantly more likely to accept your invitation. After that, be social. Talk about their work, your work, your career transition, and ease into the rest of the conversation. All of this does not have to go down in 1 message. As long as it makes sense and the conversation naturally goes in that direction, in your next message you can say that you’re interested in their company because {of some specific company fact that you admire.} Mention that you posted for the Sr. Accounting Manager role, and ask are they open to a short conversation to provide any insights. That’s a grand total of 2 messages. I’d rather see you invest energy doing this, then hitting the “apply” and “submit” buttons on 10 more job ads. Make a personal connection with the decision maker on a consistent basis, and you’re less likely to get ignored, and more likely to get into the conversations you need. You can piggyback off this method and end up with your new contacts approaching you about jobs before they’re even posted online. I show you how in our free job search training, “How to Land Your Ideal Job in 8 Weeks or Less!” You’ll see 1 candidate who did exactly that, plus another who networked the right way online to increase his callbacks 75%. Find out how to do the same thing by registering today.

How to Put Your Work Samples Online

How to Put Your Work Samples Online How to Put Your Work Samples Online 6Over the course of your career, you̢۪ve amassed quite a collection of work samples. Now, what to do with them? Having an online portfolio of your previous work, accolades, and other awards is a smart and strategic move, particularly if you̢۪re looking to find a new position. So gather up all of your pieces and put your work samples online with the help of these ideas. Organize your work. Depending on the focus of your job search, consider how to divide or categorize your work samples to make it easier for potential employers to peruse and understand. Start by creating a list of all your work samples, and then rank them by most impressive or most important for employers to see. If you have a lot of really spectacular work, you can then continue to sort your list by various categories. For example, if youre a graphic designer looking for design jobs with nonprofit organizations, youll want to display any previous nonprofit work first, followed by your other work. Learn to edit your work. Let̢۪s say you have over 100 articles that you̢۪ve written, and you absolutely, positively love each and every one of them. While it̢۪s easy to fall in love with your work, you̢۪ll really need to have a discerning eye when choosing what will make the cut- and what won̢۪t. That̢۪s where organizing and categorizing your work comes into play. The more organized your work samples are, the more youll be able to display to a potential employer without overwhelming them. Publish your work. LinkedIn is a must for any job seeker to post work samples. About.me is also a good option for a sleek, easy, simple look. Pinterest can even be a good choice if you want to devote your Pinterest page to your work portfolio. And Contently is a solid (and free!) option for writers. If you want to create your own custom web page for your work samples, its easy and free to create a blog with Blogger.com or WordPress, both of which offer a lot of really nice templates and designs. Provide a context. It̢۪s important that when you post your work samples online you provide an explanation about each one. After all, when employers see your work samples, theyll need some context to understand each of them and how it relates to the job you̢۪re applying for. But don̢۪t feel that you have to give a long-winded soliloquy for each sample. Simply offer a brief explanation of each work sample so that employers can better understand how your previous work can benefit them should they hire you. When you̢۪re job searching, you̢۪ll need to pull out all the stops- and your previous work samples- in order to position yourself ahead of the other job candidates. So select the work that best represents your skills, education, and experience, and sample your way to a successful new job! Readers, do you have your work samples onlineor in the bottom of your closet? Let us know in the comments below!

Do Your Employees Want Career Development Maybe You Should Send Them Out of the Country

Do Your Employees Want Career Development Maybe You Should Send Them Out of the Country Do Your Employees Want Career Development Maybe You Should Send Them Out of the Country Forbes contributor Alan Hall (linked above) notes that the reasons for this unhappiness are rarely tied to money or benefits: 31 percent of employees were unhappy because they felt they lacked empowerment; 35 percent were unhappy with internal politics; and 43 percent felt they did not receive proper recognition. In short: employees really care about opportunities for personal development and professional growth. If talent doesn’t find these things at your company, they become disengaged, and you’ll quickly lose them to employers who do offer these things. Millennials are especially interested in training and development opportunities, and they’re more than willing to jump ship if they’re dissatisfied â€" as we’ve noted in the past. As increasing numbers of millennials join the workforce, more and more companies will need to offer enticing professional and personal development opportunities â€" or watch as high-level talent passes them by for the organizations who do. Kyle Borchardt, chief operating officer of leadership training firm Virtuali, says that thinking about the reasons why employees leave is what helped his company create Go!, a professional development program he describes as “study abroad meets business school meets full time job.” “We really took a step back to understand and evaluate what is wrong with the business environment today, with regard to the high levels of disengagement and the high levels of attrition, especially amongst millennials,” Borchardt says. Part of the problem, Borchardt says, is that employers don’t fully understand what millennials want and need out of their jobs. While stereotypes cast millennials as needy or entitled, Borchardt believes that millennials simply respond to a different style of leadership. “As opposed to just managing millennials, you need to lead millennials,” he says. “Millennials want developmental experiences. They want to be constantly learning on the job.” With an emphasis on the experiential side of professional development, Virtuali’s Go! is a far cry from the team-building exercises and dull, day-long conferences that spring to mind when one thinks of “P.D.” Consider, for example, that Go! is currently the only leadership development program that allows participants to live abroad while continuing to work their jobs. The Program in a Nutshell   Borchardt explains that Go! is not meant to be a one-off program, something that companies do once and never again. “Our ideal client would be someone that we partner with,” he says, “We really want to become a part of their overall talent strategy. For example, Borchardt sees Go! as a good addition to any Fortune 500’s rotational program for emerging talent. “We’d ideally like to be incorporated into that rotation, or the capstone of that rotational program,” he says. The Go! program comprises four modules which all participants complete: Module one is a leadership assessment that aims to help participants discover their individual leadership styles (or “leadership brands”) through self-assessment, one-on-one coaching and 360-degree feedback from leaders, subordinates, and peers. Module two focuses on virtual team leadership. Borchardt describes it as a 3-4 week project simulation “that is a mix of live webinars and classes, and then a hands-on simulation.” In the simulation portion, teams work together to solve business cases using only virtual means of communication. Module three is where Go! really differentiates itself from other professional development programs, as participants spend 15, 30, or 45 days “studying abroad” at Virtuali’s Buenos Aires campus while continuing to work their full-time jobs. “Similar to a nights and weekends MBA program, our curriculum is a combination of MBA courses, hands-on business practicums, leadership development activities, a number of cultural activities, a speaker series, and networking events,” Borchardt says. “It’s really this very immersive experience that broadens your view on global business, and it teaches you how to lead and manage a virtual and a global team. You really come back feeling much more fluent working cross-culturally.” Module four is an alumni program, which allows graduates of the Go! program to access opportunities and resources for continuing development. Borchardt says that the program aims to meet the multiple desires of millennial employees, mixing their taste for learning and development with their passion for travel and their experiences in a globalized culture. “Our curriculum is based on the three pillars of personal and professional development, global experience, and flexible work,” Borchardt says. “I think more and more millennials really want to have a balance between their work and their personal life, and obviously as technology changes the way we work, there’s a huge skills gap that exists. Technology has evolved so rapidly, and the human component has not. People don’t know how to manage a team remotely or virtually. They don’t know how to work with people across different time zones.” The “Study Abroad” Approach to Professional Development Like a college study abroad program, in which students spend time away from their schools while still completing coursework, the Go! program sends participants off to Buenos Aires while allowing them to continue working their full-time jobs. “Because participants work throughout the entirety of the program, their development occurs on the job and can be applied in real-time, which ultimately results in more effective learning,” Borchardt explains. “That will ultimately translate to stronger leaders and greater performance.” Part of the allure of study abroad programs is that they allow students to meet and mix with new people from new walks of life. Borchardt says that Go! offers a similar opportunity. Go! participants have the opportunity to experience to people of Buenos Aires, but it should also be noted that the program itself brings together professionals from a variety of careers and industries. “We really like the cross pollination of having individuals from different companies working together. You might have a first-time manager from a Fortune 500 company paired with the director of a startup,” Borchardt says. “Maybe the industries overlap, maybe they don’t, but I think having that cross-pollination of individuals working together is paramount in terms of experience, development, networking, and building a broader understanding of how different people work in different environments.” By asking participants to work their full-time jobs while living in Buenos Aires, Go! hopes to help employees learn how to work within the flexible, globalized workforce, in which people may regularly collaborate across borders and time zones. “You understand who you are as a leader, and then you learn how to lead and manage a virtual team, and then you actually get to apply those skills in real time from an international location,” Borchardt says. Before settling on Buenos Aires, Borchardt conducted a full analysis of “about 40” cities, taking into account things like safety, cost of living, and the language. Buenos Aires met all of the criteria and also offered a valuable “sex appeal,” Borchardt jokes. Known as the “Paris of South America,” Buenos Aires offered participants an exciting location in which to develop their leadership abroad. “Go! aligns with the top benefits that emerging leaders are looking for, which are professional development, flexibility, and international experience,” Borchardt says. He believes that offering these things leads to engaged leaders, higher productivity, stronger culture, better recruitment, and better retention. “The real strength of our program is the combination of all that,” Borchardt says. “Not only will we develop your future leaders at a critical juncture in their career, we’ll also ensure that the individuals themselves remain productive and engaged and ultimately loyal.” Expansion Plans For now, Go! only has one international campus (in, as we’ve mentioned, Buenos Aires). However, Borchardt says it will not be that way forever. “Our 3-5 year plan is to expand to 4-6 new markets,” he says. “Our ideal situation would be that we have one campus on almost every continent.” Aside from expanding globally, Go! is also looking to expand technologically. Virtuali plans on instituting a platform that allows participants to access trainings, teachings, and other resources from their mobile devices. “That would include everything from the courses we currently have to some language learning tools, so when you’re abroad you can just tap your phone when you need to learn a common phrase or communicate with someone,” Borchardt explains. Go! is certainly an interesting spin on the idea of professional development, designed to quench multiple employee thirsts while keeping them loyal to their employers. After all, how easy could it be the ditch the company that let you to live in Buenos Aires for a while? Go! may be a blueprint for companies looking to attract top talent in the future. It’s no longer all about paychecks, but exciting, invigorating development opportunities.
